President Joe Farinelli Featured in UT San Diego

Looking for a new home? Be sure to do your research before joining a HOA-managed community. Walters President Joe Farinelli recently shared his 30 years of management experience with UT San Diego. Here’s what he believes are the biggest pros and cons of joining a HOA:

“A homeowners association has a defined set of standards and regulations that either you’ll agree with or not. You want to be sure the house you’re buying is in a community that has similar standards as yours, and has rules and regulations you can live with,” said Joe Farinelli, president of Walters Management, who has managed HOAs in San Diego for more than 30 years.

 Farinelli stresses the importance of reading the covenants, conditions and restriction (CC&Rs) before closing escrow.

 “You’ll either view the CC&Rs as protective covenants helping to maintain your neighborhood, or as restrictive nuisances diminishing your enjoyment of the neighborhood,” he said. If you can’t see yourself conforming to all the rules, then that home might not be for you. But Farinelli also notes that there are many benefits to a HOA-managed community.
